If you believe that social media success is measured by the number of followers you have – think again!
Many users of Twitter, Facebook and other social networks believe that the number of followers or ‘likes’ that they have on the platforms is key.
The common belief is that the more followers you have, the better your social media will convert for you. Maybe this was once the case, but it most definitely isn’t now, as users have become savvy in cutting out the “spam” on their social platforms.
In recent years, Facebook have noticed that pages with large followings started putting out content with which users were not engaging.
The system that Facebook now have in place stops this from happening. In essence, you can have a page with 5,000,000 likes but with next to zero reaches as Facebook has a vested interest in only showing content that it sees as valuable to the end user.
In theory therefore a page with one thousand likes can have more people view their content than a page with hundreds of thousands.
It has also been observed that business users with larger following are getting next to no engagement on their Twitter feeds.
This can be down to a few things, but most of the time it stems back to irrelevant followers.
“Follow 4 follow”, a method often employed by businesses to grow their Twitter followers quickly simply produces lots of followers who do not care about your company and in most cases they also follow lots of people only to help build their following. In the end then is little real value and huge lack of engagement.
So what’s the bottom line?
Well in essence its important to recognise that whilst it’s good for the ego for your business to have lots of followers or likes, it doesn’t necessarily means social media success.
The way to win on social media has nothing to do with how many followers you have and everything to do with how loyal and engaged your audience is.
So don’t make your goal solely to become followed or liked but to create interaction and loyalty.
Instead concentrate on delivering high quality, useful, interesting, relevant, and topical, added value content which leads to deeper engagement, response to your calls to action and ultimately converts to extra sales.
